Cloud-Native Focus
- February 26, the first .NET 9 Preview was released. This initial preview emphasized the growing importance of cloud-native development and intelligent apps, focusing on cloud scalability, app performance, and reducing application sizes. Key features included improvements in containers, ASP.NET Core, and .NET MAUI.
- April 30, Azure Developers – .NET Day took place with a special focus on AI integration and cloud-native application development. This event offered developers new insights into leveraging .NET 9's AI capabilities to build intelligent, scalable applications.
- May, at Microsoft Build 2024, further updates on .NET 9 were shared, including key features like chiseled containers, a focus on performance enhancements, and Native AOT (Ahead-of-Time compilation) to improve app startup times. This release highlighted how .NET continues to evolve for high-performance, cloud-native scenarios.
2023
AI Integration
- February 21, the first preview of .NET 8 was released, kicking off the year with improvements in ASP.NET Core and containerization. This release was the beginning of the new performance optimizations and features that would be central to .NET 8.
- April 30, JetBrains expanded its Rider IDE with full support for Godot, in addition to its longstanding support for Unity and Unreal Engine. The 2023 update included GDScript support, enhancing code completion, debugging, and usage tracking for Godot projects
- May, the StackOverflow Developer Survey 2023 was released, revealing that .NET continued to be one of the top technologies among developers. C# remained in 8th place in terms of language popularity, while .NET and ASP.NET Core continued to be trusted platforms.
- September 26, a major blog post was published detailing significant performance enhancements in .NET 8. These included optimizations across workloads like Blazor, ASP.NET Core, and containerized applications. This announcement marked an important step towards the release of .NET 8.
- November 14, at .NET Conf 2023, Microsoft officially launched .NET 8. Key highlights included full-stack Blazor that handle both client-side and server-side rendering, C# 12 with new features like primary constructors, collection expressions, and support for optional parameters in lambda expressions, and .NET MAUI with better support for mobile and desktop app development across Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. .NET 8 expanded AI support, including tools for integrating Azure AI services to help developers create intelligent applications.
- November 14, alongside .NET 8, Visual Studio 2022 version 17.8 was released. This version featured enhanced GitHub Copilot integration, support for .NET 8, and performance improvements across IDE functionality.
2022
ARM64, New Landscape
- February 8, .NET 6 reached Long-Term Support (LTS) status. Microsoft encouraged developers to start migrating from earlier versions such as .NET Core 3.1 to benefit from extended support and improvements in performance and scalability.
- April 12, JetBrains Rider 2022.1, which included full Unreal Engine support, was officially released.
- June 16, Microsoft released .NET Framework 4.8.1 with native ARM64 support, a crucial update for developers working on high-performance Windows applications on ARM-based architectures. This release also brought key accessibility improvements to Windows Forms and WPF.
- November 8, at .NET Conf 2022, .NET 7 was officially launched. This version introduced several performance improvements, new features for C# 11, and continued support for cross-platform development through .NET MAUI. Some highlights included enhanced Blazor support for interactive web UIs and further optimization for ARM64 architectures across the .NET ecosystem.
2021
New Cadence Kept
- April 15, Microsoft released .NET 6 Preview 3, introducing several new features like early support for MAUI (Multi-platform App UI), which aimed to unify the app development experience across iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows.
- November 9, during .NET Conf 2021, Microsoft officially launched .NET 6, which fulfilled the vision of unifying .NET Core, .NET Framework, and Mono into one platform. .NET 6 introduced several new features, including C# 10 with its new syntax improvements, enhanced performance for Blazor (a framework for building interactive web UIs), and further support for ARM64 processors.
- December 16, following the .NET 6 release, Microsoft hosted a live Q&A event to provide guidance on the new features in .NET 6 and Visual Studio 2022. This event aimed to help developers adapt quickly to the newly launched platform and included community sessions on productivity improvements, cloud-native development, and application modernization.
2020
Hold On Tied
- May 19, Microsoft Build 2020 took place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, where .NET 5 was showcased.
- November 10, the official release of .NET 5 took place during .NET Conf 2020. Microsoft emphasized .NET 5 as the future, while marking the gradual phasing out of .NET Framework. MAUI wasn't included in .NET 5 and slipped to the next year.
2019
Unification Dawn
- May 6, at Microsoft Build 2019, the official announcement of .NET 5 was made. Microsoft unveiled its vision to unify .NET Core, .NET Framework, and Mono into a single platform—.NET 5—ensuring a single codebase for all .NET application types such as desktop, mobile, and IoT.
- September 23, .NET Core 3.0 was officially released. This version included support for Windows desktop applications, such as WPF and Windows Forms, running on .NET Core, alongside significant performance improvements and code-sharing with Mono. .NET Standard 2.1 was released altogether.
- November 12, .NET Core 3.1 was declared an LTS (Long-Term Support) release, cementing Microsoft’s commitment to this modernized platform. This release solidified the unified .NET vision and paved the way for Mono’s continued integration into the ecosystem. C++/CLI support was added back on Windows.
2018

- January 5, Unity announced its plan to replace MonoDevelop-Unity IDE with Visual Studio Community starting in Unity 2018.1 release.
- January 22, Oracle announced ODP.NET Core Beta.
- January 29, CodePlex became archived.
- January 29, C# support was introduced in the optin source game engine Godot 3.0. This release allowed developers to use C# alongside GDScript, providing more options for scripting and game logic, especially for those already familiar with the .NET ecosystem.
- February 2, Microsoft published .NET Core 2.1 roadmaps.
- February 5, Microsoft announced .NET Framework 4.7.2 Early Access build 3052.
- February 16, Oracle made ODP.NET Core Beta available for download. It also updated its .NET Core statement of direction.
- February 27, Microsoft published .NET Core 2.1 Preview 1.
- March 6, Oracle published ODP.NET Core Beta 2.
- March 26, Unity released its C# source code under a reference-only license.

- April 11, Microsoft released .NET Core 2.1 Preview 2.
- April 19, JetBrains released Rider 2018.1 with Entity Framework 6.x and Roslyn analyzer support.

- May 30, Microsoft shipped .NET Core 2.1.
- July 10, Unity shipped 2018.2 release. IL2CPP became the default scripting backend.
- September, .NET Core 2.2 entered its preview phase with updates to SignalR, improved HTTP/2 support in Kestrel, and other performance optimizations, laying the groundwork for future advancements in .NET Core.
- December 4, the full release of ASP.NET Core 2.2 introduced new features, such as an improved endpoint routing system, updated templates for Bootstrap 4, and a new SignalR Java Client for Android apps. This version strengthened ASP.NET Core's position as a comprehensive platform for modern web development.

- January 20, Xamarin released Visual Studio for Mac Preview 3.
- January 27, Microsoft updated Visual Studio 2017 RC. .NET Core SDK 1.0 RC3 was included.
- March 7, Microsoft released Visual Studio 2017 RTM and .NET Core Tooling 1.0. Official .NET Core reference application was also published to GitHub.
- March 7, Xamarin released Visual Studio for Mac Preview 4 as well as Visual Studio Mobile Center Preview.
- March 15, Xamarin released Visual Studio for Mac Preview 5.

- November 16, Microsoft announced Windows Compatibility Pack for .NET Core, a few Windows only NuGet packages.
- December 4, Microsoft released Visual Studio 2017 15.5 and the corresponding Visual Studio for Mac upgrade, featuring C# 7.2 and many other improvements. Xamarin.Forms started to support .NET Standard 2.0.
- December 10, RemObjects released Elements 10.

- January 13, JetBrains announced Project Rider at NDC London conference, an IntelliJ based cross platform C# IDE.
- January 19, Microsoft renamed new platforms to .NET Core 1.0 and ASP.NET Core 1.0.
- February 24, Microsoft acquired Xamarin.
- March 1, Project Rider entered private EAP.
- March 16, the game engine CryEngine V with C# support was officially released. This support was provided through the CryMono project, which allowed developers to write game logic using C# alongside the traditional C++ and Lua scripting options .
- March 31, at Build 2016 Microsoft announced the new features of Xamarin platforms, and made it free and open source for all developers.
- March 31, JetBrains and Unity joined .NET Foundation.
- March 31, Mono was relicensed under MIT.
- April 26, Unity published experimental build to run development environment on Linux.
- April 27, at Evolve 2016, Xamarin SDK became open source at http://open.xamarin.com.
- May 6, Microsoft announced that .NET Core 1.0 RC2 will be shipped in mid-May, while RTM is expected by the end of June.

- April 2, Microsoft open sourced ASP.NET MVC under MS-PL.
- April 27, NancyFx project started.
- April 27, Google released Android 1.5 (Capcake).
- June 8, Apple announced iPhone 3GS.

- April, Miguel de Icaza demonstrated the initial work on Mono at GUADEC 2001 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The C# compiler could compile itself.

Preview Time
- June 22, Microsoft debut its .NET Platform on Forum 2000.
- June, Philip Craig demonstrated the prototype of NUnit, a clone of JUnit on Java platform.
- July 11, Microsoft published the first preview build of .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET at PDC, revealing the C# programming language. Anders Hejlsberg led the design works of C#, another important language after his previous work, Delphi.
- August, Microsoft, HP and Intel co-sponsored the submission of specifications for the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) and C# programming language to ECMA.

- October 6, Microsoft released Visual J++ 6.0, which features Microsoft Foundation Classes for rapid Windows application development.
1997
The Start of J++
- January, Microsoft released Visual J++ 1.0. Due to a bug in the installation media, it could not be installed on Windows 95. Microsoft promised to resolve that very soon.
- March 3, Microsoft released Visual J++ 1.1, a free upgrade for all J++ users.
- May, Scott Guthrie graduated from Duke University and joined Microsoft.
- August, Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena started the GNOME project, aiming to build an open source desktop environment for Linux, to replace KDE who relies on the closed source Qt library.
- October, SUN sued Microsoft and asked Microsoft to follow Java specification in its J++ product line.
1996
Entering Java Land
- March 12, Microsoft licensed Java from SUN.
- October 15, Microsoft released SDK for Java.
- November, Anders Hejlsberg joined Microsoft after leaving Borland. Borland sued Microsoft for mind drain later.
